NGC 7000 & the Pelican Nebula — a wide-field look at the famous emission-nebula pair in Cygnus, near Deneb.
NGC 7000 (the North America Nebula) and the adjacent Pelican Nebula (IC 5070) are parts of the same vast H II region (Sh 2-117 / W80), divided on the sky by a dark dust lane (Lynds 935). Hydrogen gas glowing in Hα paints the familiar continental outline and the pelican’s “beak,” while young hot stars drive ongoing star formation along ridges such as the Cygnus Wall.
- Distance: about 2,590 light-years (modern Gaia-based estimate; older figures often quoted ~1,800 ly)
- Physical size: the full ionized complex spans roughly 140 light-years across; NGC 7000 alone stretches about 90 light-years north–south
- Apparent size: NGC 7000 covers roughly 120′ × 100′; the Pelican is about 60′ × 50′
